I am gonna get a lot of crap for this but I think feminism has some responsibility for the phenomenon of subdued males. By convincing women they no longer need a man, a man's motivation is often shot since the market of marriageable women who take their vows seriously and dare to want to feel protected by a man is very slim.

Also convincing women to act like men (in the worst sense, ie promiscuity and lack of desire to form a family) did a lot to ruin the feminine/masculine dynamic between the sexes.
