I took dozens of environmental-based and sustainability-focused classes in college, and one of the things I learned is that grass is the biggest irrigated agricultural “crop” in the country. More than any other crop, most of which we depend on for survival, we dedicate the most space in this country to aesthetic grass. Sure, I get the appeal of having some nicely trimmed grass for throwing a ball or letting your dog out, or having a barbecue in the summer, but dedicating most of your property to grass isn’t just negligent, it’s downright destructive.
